Through the OLI project, Carnegie Mellon is working to help the World Wide Web make good on its promise of widely accessible and effective online education. OLI grew out of collaboration among cognitive scientists, experts in human computer interaction and seasoned faculty who have both a deep expertise in their respective fields and a strong commitment to excellence in higher education. The project adds to online education the crucial elements of instructional design grounded in cognitive theory, formative evaluation for students and faculty, and iterative course improvement based on empirical evidence.

With more than 1,800 free courses, MIT has the best OpenCourseWare program. Courses cover nearly every topic imaginable and are translated into several different languages. Audio and video courses are also available.
#2 University of California, Berkeley
UC Berkeley webcasts hundreds of courses and lectures every semester. Current and archived courses can be experienced through on-demand replay. Course topics include everything from archeology to psychology.
#3 Carnegie Mellon University
Carnegie Mellon University makes a wide range of free online courses available through their Open Learning Initiative. The high quality courses are comparable to those offered on campus and cover topics like engineering, chemistry, biology, physics, statistics, economics and the French language.
#4 Utah State University
Utah State University offers more than 50 comprehensive online courses through their OpenCourseWare program. Available departments include, but are not limited to: agriculture, anthropology, engineering, education, history, languages, physics and theatre arts.
#5 Brigham Young University
Brigham Young University offers dozens of free personal enrichment courses through their Independent Study program. Designed for self-learning, the courses cover a wide range of subjects, including religion, recreation, professional development, music, history, government and genealogy.
#6 University of Notre Dame
The University of Notre Dame publishes 30 free courses that focus on the human condition. Some of the course offerings include Africana and Middle East studies, history, philosophy, sociology, political science, theology and gender studies.
#7 University of California, Irvine
In addition to the California Subject Examination for Teachers, the University of California Irvine offers a number of free courses in three different languages: English, Spanish and Portugese. Course topics include everything from business analysis and marketing to spa operations and human resources development. There is also a great personal finance course that nearly everyone can benefit from.

Britain’s largest university, The Open University, has an Open Learn website with a huge free course catalog. Some of the subjects that are covered include art, history, business, education, law, computer science, math, foreign languages, society and technology. Courses are labeled as introductory, intermediate and advanced so that it is easy to find appropriate course materials.
#9 Tufts University
Tufts University provides free online access to course materials from its many schools, including the School of Medicine, the School of Dental Medicine, the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, the School of Arts and Sciences, the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and the Fletcher School (the nation’s oldest graduate professional school of international relations).
#10 University of Massachusetts, Boston
UMass Boston makes all sorts of free courses and course materials available through an open content license. Some of the courses available to self-learners cover subjects like biology, history, math, nursing and health sciences, psychology, counseling and special education.
#11 Stanford University
Stanford University and iTunes have collaborated to create Stanford on iTunes U. This initiative makes a wide range of Stanford courses and other digital audio content available via the iTunes Store. Free downloads include courses, lectures and various events.

Yale University makes free courses available though their Open Yale Courses website. Each course includes high-quality video lectures and other educational materials. Course topics include English, astronomy, physics, religious studies, philosophy, psychology and political science.
#13 Capilano College
Canada’s Capilano College provides a nice selection of free courses to self-learners around the world. Current offerings include courses in business, art history, chemistry, anthropology, computer science, geography, math, English, philosophy and studio art.
#14 University of Southern Queensland
The University of Southern Queensland’s OpenCourseWare program offers free access to sample courses from each of the five faculties. Courses provide education in tourism, technology, computer programming, science and teaching.
#15 University of Utah
The University of Utah’s OpenCourseWare Program makes nearly one dozen free courses available online through nine different departments. Current course offerings cover a broad range of topics, including art, biology, chemistry, physics, economics, history, teaching, pharmacotherapy and English.
#16 College of Eastern Utah
The College of Eastern Utah offers access to nearly 20 free online courses through their many different departments. Some of the courses self-learners can choose from explore subjects like business, chemistry, geology, physics, geography, history, math, music, philosophy, psychology and nursing.
#17 John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
The John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health offers free online access to some of the school’s most popular courses. All of the courses relate to public health. Some of the topics that are covered include general public health, chronic diseases, infectious diseases, nutrition, maternal health, genetics, global health and health policy.
#18 Dixie State College
Dixie State OpenCourseWare has an interesting collection of free courses that can’t be found through most OpenCourseWare programs. There are ten courses available through five different departments: computer and information technology, elementary education, family studies, humanities and mathematics.
#19 Western Governors University
Western Governors University, an online non-profit university, offers free access to more than a dozen liberal arts courses. A wide range of subjects can be studied, including economics, geography, language and communications, natural science, critical writing and literature. Information technology courses are expected to be added soon.
#20 Delft University of Technology
TU Delft in the Netherlands provides high quality educational materials that have been organized into courses through their OpenCourseWare program. Most courses focus on technology associated with economic and environmental sustainability and safety. Examples of some of the MSc programs that offer free courses include water management, microelectronics and offshore engineering.
#22 Utah Valley State College
Utah Valley State College makes a number of open education resources available through their UV Open website. The online courses run on Moodle Learning Management System software and cover topics like career and life planning, distance education and entrepreneurship.
#22 United Nations University
The United Nations University began offering free courses online a couple of years ago. Their catalog now includes more than a dozen courses on topics like electronic government, water resource management, technology and economic development.
#23 Weber State University
Weber State University’s OpenCourseWare offerings are limited, but they do have course topics that are hard to find anywhere else, such as criminal justice, web 2.0 and stress management.
#24 Glasgow University
The UK’s Glasgow University has several audio and video courses that can be downloaded to mp3 players or subscribed to through iTunes. Some of the courses available for download explore 2D digitization, Kant and document encoding.
#25 Universidad Nacional De Colombia
Universidad Nacional De Colombia makes a wide array of free courses available for Spanish speaking students. Subjects that can be studied include administration, science, nursing, art, agronomy, engineering, architecture, medicine and dentistry.
